ESPN “First Take” co-host Max Kellerman said that the problem is not Kaepernick, it is that the NFL injects politics by playing the National Anthem.
Kellerman said during Thursday morning’s show that the NFL injects politics “by playing the national anthem and putting pressure on you to stand for it.”
He made the statement during a segment that compared NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick to world renowned boxer Muhammad Ali during a discussion with Seattle Seahawks defensive end Michael Bennett.
They both were asked to do things that went against their conscience. In this country, in the United States of America, you don’t have to do that. We are free to make our own choices. And if our conscience is bothering us, we can follow that.
In Muhammad Ali’s case, he was asked to take a step forward and become a part of the Vietnam War, and he was against it on religious and moral and ethical principles, and he refused to take the step and he faced five years jail time but was ultimately vindicated in a Supreme Court case. OK, but he did have his prime stripped, his license revoked and he couldn’t earn a living for four years, all that.
Colin Kaepernick also did not go looking for a protest. It came to him. He was asked to stand for the national anthem. You do not have to stand for the national anthem. And even if it it was a rule that you did, is that Colin Kaepernick injecting politics in the NFL? No. That’s the NFL injecting politics by playing the national anthem and putting pressure on you to stand for it in the first place.
No… Mr. Kellerman. The NFL is not ‘injecting’ anything. NFL fans LOVE standing for the flag and the national anthem. You have obviously been to a game or two!
Standing for the national anthem did NOT go against Kaepernick’s conscience. He just chose to do a 3 minute antic on his employers time.
Kaepernick sure does keep things stirred up!
Just last week, Fox Sports analyst Jason Whitlock said that Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is the “poster boy for all these alleged conservative bigoted NFL owners”.
Whitlock stated that the Dallas Cowboys are the perfect landing spot for Colin Kaepernick because they, and owner Jerry Jones, “voted for Trump and hate black people”.
Whitlock seems to think that Kaepernick cannot find a team because the world hates black people. Maury Povitch says, “That’s a lie!”
There are three major reasons why Kaepernick is unemployable, and none of them have to do with the color of his skin.
First, some teams genuinely believe that he can’t play.
Second, some teams fear the backlash from fans after getting him.
Third, the rest genuinely hate him and can’t stand what he did [kneeling for the national anthem]. They want nothing to do with him. They think showing no interest is a form of punishment. I think some teams also want to use Kaepernick as a cautionary tale to stop other players in the future from doing what he did.
When are these guys going to quit deflecting blame and just admit that Kaepernick blew it?
