Well, this doesn’t look good. Not at all. James Comey’s associates dropped a bomb this afternoon… the revenge of Comey begins. He claims he has a memo in which President Trump asked him to stop the investigation into Flynn. The White House says it’s a lie. I’d like to see that memo. I’d also like to know who’s doing all the damned leaking. We need context on this ‘memo’ to determine what is and isn’t true here. Just a week ago, Comey said that Trump had done absolutely nothing to impede the Russian investigation and now this.
Comey kept detailed memos of every call on the phone or in person with Trump. I would honestly expect nothing less from the head of the FBI. The New York Times said Comey wrote the memo shortly after an Oval Office meeting on Feb. 14th, the day after Flynn resigned from the Trump administration. The paper acknowledged it had not seen a copy of the memo, but said a Comey associate read parts of it to a reporter over the phone. Sounds to me as if someone is trying to get even here.
Former FBI Director James Comey associates are leaking more information about his conversations with President Donald Trump, asserting that the president asked Comey to let his former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn go.
“I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go,” Trump told Comey, according to parts of the memo read to the New York Times. “He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”
At the White House Tuesday afternoon, White House aides denied the story.
“This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey,” they said, assuring reporters that Trump never asked Comey to shut down the investigation.
They also pointed to a statement from acting F.B.I. director Andrew G. McCabe saying a week ago that there had been no effort to impede the Russian investigation.
According to the Times, Comey kept detailed memos about every conversation he had with Trump over the phone and in person. After Trump spoke to him about Flynn, he shared the memo about the conversation with senior FBI officials.
The memo was presented as the clearest evidence yet that Trump tried to influence the Justice Department and FBI probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign and alleged links to Trump’s associates. But the White House says that it is flat out wrong. “[T]he President has never asked Mr. Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn,” an official said. “The President has the utmost respect for our law enforcement agencies, and all investigations. This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the President and Mr. Comey.”
Trump is said to have told Comey, “I hope you can see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. … He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.” The only thing Comey said in return is, “I agree he is a good guy.” The thing is, can you trust the memos? Or Comey? I don’t and I guess we will just see what comes of this. Things are really heating up.
